Chinese social networks are currently on the front lines of censorship drudgery, actively removing posts before others can see them; even before it’s very government can even see them. For example, ByteDance employs thousands of content reviewers, who make up the largest number of employees at such particular company. Other companies outsource the undertaking to “censorship-for-hire” entities, including one owned by China’s party mouthpiece People’s Daily. The social networks are commonly punished for letting comments slide that would make the government look bad.
